Projects

The innovation network XR-INTERACTION initiates research and innovation projects between tech companies and research institutions. Some of the projects are presented here.

The KIX – Knowledge Incubator is a research and qualification hub at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. It fosters an open innovation ecosystem where students, researchers, and external partners collaborate on future-oriented projects. By linking technology, application, and business, KIX promotes knowledge transfer and interdisciplinary exchange. Through co-research and participatory learning formats, it develops digital skills and enables practical solutions and innovative business models that drive regional digital transformation.

Splexit is more than a VR tool for “better learning” – it is a building block for digitally activating the education system. The software enables immersive presentations on devices from tablets to XR glasses. Lessons become three-dimensional experiences that teachers and students can design and explore together. Presentations can be enriched with 3D objects, historical sites, or enhanced visualizations of traditional blackboards.

Project period: Jul. 2025 – Jun. 2026

Project partner: Blickwinkel GbR

Funding parter: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy , IGP

Funding volume: 56.000 €

Cultural excursions offer valuable insights into history or art, but are often limited by financial, geographical, or time constraints. The project uses 2Sync GmbH’s auto-adaptive mixed reality technology to enable virtual excursions. The application overlays the real environment with holograms, transforms physical objects, and can turn an entire classroom into a new world. Teachers can set up shared virtual experiences within minutes. The project explores the feasibility of such learning opportunities and the business models they may generate.

Project period: Jul. 2025 – Jun. 2026

Project partner: 2Sync GmbH

Funding parter: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy , IGP

Funding volume: 56.000 €

The project is developing a VR platform that uses playful elements and immersive experiences to help children practise their social skills in various scenarios in a safe environment. Interactive gamification elements, complex interaction possibilities and therapeutic scenarios are designed for this purpose. Several users will support each other in multi-user sessions. Represented by avatars, the children experience a sense of community in these virtual group interactions and improve their social skills.

Project period: Mrz. 2025 – Feb. 2028

Project partner: TH Deggendorf, Solid White GmbH, YOUSE GmbH, Krankenhaus Landshut, Uniklinik Bonn

Funding parter: Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space

Funding volume: 1.300.000 €

The Viwo project is an initiative funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to establish a strong ecosystem for virtual worlds. The aim of the project is to build a network of companies, research institutions and public actors to drive the development and implementation of innovative virtual world technologies in line with the EU strategy for Web 4.0 and virtual worlds. Therefor Mittweida University of Applied Sciences will expand the XR-INTERACTION network with a strong European partner network.

Project period: Mrz. 2025 – Feb. 2026

Project partner: Hochschule Mittweida

Funding parter: Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space

Funding volume: 75.000 €

The project focuses on the reciprocal use and further development of generative AI and spatial computing for the implementation of multimodal and context-sensitive AI assistance functions in virtual and mixed realities. The central question here is how the combined use of both areas of technology can improve the experience and added value of sales processes.

Project period: Jan. 2025 – Dec. 2027

Project partner: ramblr GmbH, t2k GmbH, TU Chemnitz, Hochschule Mitteida

Funding parter: Sächische Aufbaubank

Funding volume: 1.600.000 €

The project is developing an innovative platform that uses Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT 4 to create customized AI learning assistants. These assistants are additionally visualized by digital avatars, enabling a more natural interaction that can potentially significantly improve the learning experience.

The aim of the project is to clearly convey a basic understanding of topics such as size, mass, gravity, stability, distances and much more. The basis is formed by haptic models that represent the actual proportional mass of their “originals” (Eiffel Tower 12cm=1g; Earth 13cm=6kg). By expanding into augmented reality (AR), the aim is to create a learning experience that combines the haptic and digital worlds.
