User-centered tool for participatory urban planning in virtual and augmented reality (CityplanningXR)

Rethinking immersive participation - making urban planning tangible and inclusive with XR and AI

The future of urban planning: citizens interact intuitively with a digital city model using AR glasses and a tablet.

Project description

The project aims to improve democratic participation formats in urban planning processes through the use of extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence. XR technologies such as virtual and augmented reality enable an immersive and intuitive presentation of planning drafts that is more accessible to laypeople in particular than classic 2D visualizations. In order to overcome existing hurdles such as complex 3D content and a lack of user-centered applications, an easily integrated XR tool is being developed that is playful to use and appeals to all relevant target groups. The solution is supplemented by AI-based, natural language interaction and evaluation functions. The development is user-centered, involving real contexts and partners such as the Chemnitz City Planning Office. The aim is an economically scalable application in the public and private planning sector.
